Our Story
We are a family run business with a story to tell.
In 1929 Margorie Green was born; a baby girl that grew up to raise a family with strong values and love and respect for one another. Margorie or Margie as she was known to her close friends and family had a big passion for baking. Every morning she was up early baking a delicious cake ready for any visitor to enjoy with a cuppa. Margie always had a dream to open and run her own bakery but the toll of raising five children meant she never got to realise that dream.
In 2001 Margie was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. Margie fought the disease like the trooper she was for 7 long years before sadly it was too much for her and she passed away in March 2008.
Luckily for us Margie gave birth to 5 wonderful children, one of whom decided to carry on baking in honour of her Mum. Her daughter, Lindsay, was inspired by the growing trend in Cupcakes and her love for cake to start baking. The feedback was incredible and soon her friends and family were encouraging her to set up a business.
Soon enough her husband Trevor and second born son Jeremy had joined her to start building the business up. Trevor a freelance event management consultant was quickly shown the ropes whilst Jeremy an online marketing consultant got to work on the website. “Within weeks we had the site up and running and people calling up to make orders” says Lindsay. “I have to say at first I was pretty nervous, you put your heart and soul into something and you only want it to do well”. And well it did! “Feedback from our customers was nothing but positive, not only the cupcakes but the level of service we provide which is really important to us”.
A personal crusade
But what’s the real reason for starting the business? Lindsay explained; “My Mum was an inspiration to us all, a tireless bundle of love and laughter, during her final years I felt overwhelmed with the support from Parkinson Society gave our family. I wanted to set up the business not only to fulfil my passion of baking but to do some good with the work we were set to do”. Indulgence Cupcake Company is a supporter of the fight against Parkinson’s Disease and donates both time and money to the charities that support research and the families affected by this terrible disease.
Margie was also very passionate about people affected by HIV and AIDs after losing a very close friend to the virus. HIV and AIDs affect millions of people globally and has an impact locally and the family has always actively supported the cause. Jeremy explains “Brighton and Hove has the highest prevalence of HIV and AIDs in the UK outside of London. Being born and bred Brighton I have a strong passion for the city and its inhabitants and we feel as a business very strongly about supporting those affected.”
In 2011 Indulgence Cupcake Company set up Brighton Bake Off, Brighton's first charity baking competition. The event sees local amateur bakers fight to win the crown of Brighton's best amateur baker.
